With Christmas coming and the kids out of school, I’ve been busier than ever, so blogging has gone by the wayside. The house is decked out in Christmas decor, the cookies are baking (finally!) and almost all the presents are under the tree. I don’t say that to be bragadocious but to highlight my intention this year of being present in the moment. You see, in years past, I have been scrambling around with little details all the way up to Christmas and it really detracted from my being ever-present for my family and friends.
Then again, I also feel ready for Christmas in every way because of the gift I received this past Sunday. I have several great “jobs” (the best one being “Mom”) but included on that list is that I have the pleasure of serving as my church’s Children’s Music Director. And the Tyger Roars kids music program led worship with its presentation of Camel Lot, a Christmas musical. Sure, a Christmas musical can be dicey, especially when the kids range in ages from 4-13. And there were times this past month when I honestly thought I had bitten off more than I could chew. Between the younger kids who needed water or to go to the bathroom to the older ones who were too cool to sing, we had drama everywhere!
But what I didn’t factor in was the 1) motivation of these kids; and 2) the amazing support of their families, who rallied behind it and helped pull everything into place. Set decorations–check! Costumes–done! Propmaster–yes! AV/music–under control. I was overwhelmed by the support.
The end result was nothing short of a Christmas miracle compared to the first rehearsals. They received a well-deserved standing ovation (hey, we Presbyterians hardly like to clap in service, let alone a standing O) which was quite a big deal. I couldn’t be prouder of them and how wonderful it was to have them reinforce the message of Christmas: don’t miss the manger! Those 24 kids were my Christmas gift, and they in turn rewarded everyone there with that special present.
And hey, having completed the musical, I can relax now!
I wish you all the hope and peace and joy that Christmas brings and may you remember why we celebrate CHRISTmas!
